This section covers four competitions organised
by the Dorset Doddlers and two County competitions:
1.
THE AGE-ADJUSTED CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 2010
Organiser: Martin Lawson. Tel 01258 881140, Email doddlerssec@aol.com
This championship aims to reward effort rather
than outright speed. Actual race times
are adjusted for age, so that older runners get their times reduced to what it
is calculated they would have achieved in their prime. The adjustments are made using an age-graded
results calculator, available from www.runbayou.com/Wavacalc.htm. The effects don’t cut in until around age 35,
so if you are younger than this, your times won’t change.
The age-adjusted times are used to put runners
in a revised race order. Points are then
assigned according to race position (1 point for first, 2 for second, and so
on). The championship is based around 12
local races, one each month. You must
complete at least 5 of the 12 races to qualify. Your points from your best 5
race results are then added up, and the lower your overall total is, the better
you have done. There will be separate
awards for best men and best women.
Winners in 2009 were:
Men: 1st Ian Pollard, 2nd
James Rielly, 3rd Ben King

2. THE KEITH VINE HANDICAP LEAGUE 2010
Organiser: Martin Lawson. Tel 01258 881140, Email doddlerssec@aol.com
The Handicap League is intended to encourage runners of all abilities to improve their race performance. Although the league table reflects the fact that people are competing with each other, the handicapping system means that individuals are also competing with themselves, by trying to improve their times. The best way to do well in the league is to keep one step ahead of the handicap by making steady improvement throughout the year. It also helps to run lots of races, because only your best 10 results are counted.
A race qualifies for the Handicap League if at least 5 people running as Dorset Doddlers finish the race. Everybody is given a handicap time for a mile which is intended to reflect their average pace over a flat 10km course. This handicap pace is used to predict the time you should expect to do in a race. I have used your handicap time from the 2009 league where available. If you are new to the league, your first result will be used to generate your handicap time.
For each race adjustments to the predicted times are made to accommodate different race distances and more challenging terrain or weather conditions. 10 mile races are assumed to increase mile times by 4%, half marathons by 6%, and marathons by 18%. Hilly, off-road or swampy courses will have additional adjustments applied to reflect the increased time needed.
Once the results of a race are known, your actual and predicted times are compared. Runners are ranked according to how far they were ahead or behind their predicted times. The person who was furthest ahead is awarded 25 points; the next person gets 24 points and so on. After each race, your handicap pace is adjusted by moving it to a point half way between where it was and where your most recent result suggests it should be.
Winners in 2009 were:
Men: 1st Ian Hitching, 2nd
Ed Vincent, 3rd John Cowley
Women: 1st Rachel Baker, 2nd
Christine Willis, 3rd Lynda Faulkner
3.
THE JOHN DEACON HANDICAP RACE 2010
Thursday 24 June 2010
Organiser: Rev David Seymour.
This road race is held in place of Thursday
evening training and is over a distance of about 11 km. Entrants must provide David with a recent
race time from which he calculates your expected time for the event. Runners do not all start together. Instead they set off individually and if
David’s calculations are perfect, they all finish in a dead-heat at the
end. This is a race that anyone might
win!
Thursday 15th July
Organiser: Roger Phelps. Tel 01963 370587, Email
roger.phelps@uk.thalesgroup.com
This event is held in place of Thursday evening
training and combines running and cycling.
The running is mainly on country tracks and the cycling is on local
roads.
